The secret of this success is devoted to a freshness and high quality of their food material as well as a special recipe of Chanburi noodle (called “Sen Chan” in Thai) created by his grandmother. Also, some famous dish like Pad Thai Kai Ho (Pad Thai Sen Chan with big shrimps wrapped with fried egg) was the main dish that Khun Samai learned from her mother in-law and led her and her husband decided to open this Pad Thai restaurant.

This restaurant has a special menu, namely Pad Thai Song-Krueng. You can choose between Sen Chan or grass noodle, then garnished with crab meat, grind cuttlefish and sliced mango. Due to its relatively high price (150 Baht), the waiter will repeat with you the price before taking order. Also, Pad Thai without noodle is good for health-concern customers.

Not only the food that everyone likes from this restaurant, does the fresh fruit drink exclusively here also gain popularity not less than their food. Every single ingredient of their dish is homemade. And, their secret recipes to make all these ingredients are derived from the father generation over 80 years ago. Besides their flavorful BBQ pork, crispy pork and Chinese sausage, their boiled eggs are not normal one but special cooked in Pa-Loh (Chinese herbal) soup. In addition, their sticky brown sauce is steamed over a night spreading out a bit burn aroma when tasted. Even your stomach is full; you are still able to eat it with delicious taste.

This restaurant has also received “Shell Chuan Chim” sign by M.R. Tanadsri Sawasdiwat. It has been told that he firstly tried this rice with BBQ Pork since he was still studying at Thammasart University where this restaurant has its first presence back to 84 years ago. With long establishment and a guarantee signature by professional food taster, it’s another restaurant that you must try!

Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
It was initially started with one Muslim guy who rented the shop from her father and sold traditional roti for over 10 years. After he left, Khun Wantanee decided to continue making and selling roti with her own special recipe – the crispy one in square shape. She has special technique with Wheat Flour together with a control of perfect heating level (this makes roti not too oily!). At the end, every roti will be served at hot and golden-colored crispy. However, the traditional roti in square shape (with or without egg) can be ordered here also.

So, it is a must for you to try at least one crispy roti (30 Baht) at the shop. And, maybe to buy one more back home ☺. This golden crispy part is just right about and perfectly matched with ice coffee or “O-Liang” (ice coffee without milk) originally from her dad’s recipe. But, if you are hungrier than just to eat roti, you can also order Kuaytew Lhord (rice noodle with Chinese pork stew soup) or Khao Pad Kapi (fried rice with shrimp paste) making from high quality material to fulfill your stomach as well.
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
Back to that time, you would see many rich and high-positioned guys together with many nice cars would park their cars and fill up their stomach there, particularly at Alex Rachawong Phochanalai Restaurant. This restaurant was situated at Rachawong Pier since 1942 before moving to the current location in 1995.

This restaurant is very good at egg noodles, which you cannot find any places similar to their noodles – softer, longer, thinner, and tastier than any other noodles. So, there is no doubt that you should order the egg noodle dish here, like Arsawin Egg Noodle, which is the fish ball egg noodle with extra ingredients like internal organs. The story behind the name of this dish came from the fact that many high-ranked soldiers in the old times liked to come here and order the extra-ingredient noodles to show off their wealth and social status and then Alek just added the internal organs to his normal fish ball egg noodles to serve them. After that, this dish was called as Arsawin Noodles or the noodles for the knights (Arsawin = Knight). Apart from Arsawin Egg Noodle, another famous noodle dish here is “E-Mee” (or Baked Egg Noodle “Alex Rachawong” Style) which requires special procedure of both firing and streaming the egg noodles before serving. Hence, your baked egg noodles will be crispy on the top part and soft in the below part.

Apart from the egg noodles dishes here, other high-end-recipe and special-cooked dishes like Shark’s Fin Soup, Sautéed Fresh Oyster in Thick Sauce, and Fried Oyster on Crispy Pancake “Alex Rachawong” Style, are also one of their greatest dishes worth to try. At the end, their homemade “Rachawong” ice-cream is great to reduce your oily mouth after having your Chinese meals.

Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
She started with only the bakery shop in the beginning and later on expanded her menus to include main courses and desserts as well. She has come up with different recipes of food, bakery and dessert on her own. Sometimes from baking and cooking classes. Sometimes from her trial and error. She mainly gets influence on the baking and cooking from her mother as well as from her grandmother who both loved in baking Thai traditional desserts before when she was the great chef assistant at that time.

The highly recommended dishes here would be the traditional dishes like Kanom Jeen Nam Prik Poo (Thai spaghetti with crabmeat in chili paste), Pan Clib Plaa (Baked fish wrapped with flour), and Kanom Pak Kaad (Fried flour with pork and bean sprouts). Also, custard apple in fresh milk is so delicious to end your meal. Noted that her secret recipe of this dessert is the way to take out every seeds of custard apple before blending the only meat of custard apple as ice cream. And, it is the perfect match with fresh milk.

For the bakery lovers, there is a variety of choices for you from every kind of pie (like chicken pie) to every kind of cake (like chocolate cake) and every kind of ban (like butter ban). If you cannot take it all, take home for your love ones also not a bad idea ☺
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
Due to loving cooking food, she started her restaurant at the current place in Bangkok in 1971. Every times she went out for food material shopping, she would bring her children along to the fresh market and told the secret how to select each material for the great cooking. So, every of her children are also great at cooking same as hers. After she passed away, Khun Weerapol (one of her son) has continued the restaurant business at this place and has become the chef himself for every dish.

The renowned dish here is Sukhothai noodle (the noodles from Sukhothai Province), which is different from other noodles at filling BBQ pork and green sprouts in the noodles. Their recipe is really original as eating this dish in Sukhothai ☺ Another outstanding dish is Kanom Jeen Sao Nam (Thai Spaghetti with coconut milk, pineapple, & dried shrimp) which is very difficult to find, especially the good one like this. They will make sure that the pineapple will be freshly cut for every single dish. They are also good at original Thai desserts that they will make different one on different day like Intanin (every Monday), Khao Fang (every Tuesday & Friday), Rice with Durian in coconut milk (every Wednesday). Every of their desserts are all great & really original, especially Khao Fang that they will get it directly from Sukhothai.

Though their restaurant opens everyday, there will be one day a month that this restaurant will be closed since the owners will go to Sukhothai to buy Khao Fang for their special dessert. It is not gonna be the same day every month that they will close their restaurant. It depends on when they run out of Khao Fang. So, make sure the day you plan to try their food is not the same day that they have a trip to Sukhothai ☺

Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
Their Ped Pa Lo did gain pretty much popularity. After their father passed away, they decided to scale down and sell only their signature dish like Ped Pa Lo as well as expanded to steamed duck noodles. However, after the Bird Flu Outbreak in Thailand, they have increased their menus to include steamed pork noodles as well because many customers avoided eating bird-related animals. They adopt the same recipe of their reputable steamed duck to cook steamed pork. After a while, their steamed pork has become popular not less than their steamed duck.

Their main secret recipe is at the way to steam (at least 6 hours!!) the duck and the pork as well as the way to select (big size and high quality) the duck and the pork. They will not finish the steamed soup in each day. Instead they have left some amount of the soup and steam more duck/pork in the same soup to make the soup as well as the meat tastier.

Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
However, their “Yentafo” (fish ball noodles with special red sauce made by brewed bean curd) has just been discovered since last 15 years in the current generation. Before this, they sold typical Chinese menus in the big plates like shark fin soup, fish maw soup, shrimp cake, etc… Their “Yentafo” has their own secret recipe at the soup as they use tons of pig bones steaming in the Chinese herbal soup since the 5 o’clock every morning. So, their soup is very sweet (not from sugar) and tasty.

Apart from Yentafo and other kind of fish ball noodles, you can have a la cart menus here as well. The recommended menus include Grilled Fish Chili Paste Fried Rice with Salty Egg, Pineapple Fried Rice, Mango Chili Paste Fired Rice with Sweet Pork, etc… Their dishes are so delicious as cooked by the real Chinese chef family so that some recipe is adopted from Chinese way of cooking.

Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
However, over the last 30 years, they have moved their restaurant to the current address.

Their Rad Nhaa (noodles with sticky flour sauce) and Pad See Eew (Stir fired noodles with soy sauce) are differentiated by using only the top part of vegetables (called “Yod Pak” in Thai) even though it is costly to them. One of the limited old Thai famous restaurants in the lower end of Sukhumvit area. The motivation to open this restaurant was derived from the opening of Samitivej Hospital at that time. The owner family has turned their rental house (at the current venue) to be this restaurant. And, also turn their owned chef in their house to be the chef for the restaurant.

Most of the menus here are like traditional Thai cuisine that most Thai people ate at home in the old times but difficult to find in the present days. So, you will find something like Tom Krati Sai Bua (Coconut soup with lotus), Look Rok Soup (entrails and minced pork soup), Roti with different kinds of Thai curry. Also, they are good at many kinds of Kanom Jeen (Thai Spaghetti), which they will provide different kinds of Kanom Jeen on different days like Kanom Jeen Sao Nam (Thai spaghetti with pineapple on topped with coconut milk) on every Saturday. Similarly, they will provide different kinds of Thai desserts on different days like Sweet Banana with Coconut Milk on every Saturday. Check this out from the waitress before ordering.

Especially, every summer (March to May of every year) they will serve Royal-Recipe Khao Shae (rice with icy jasmine water with different condiments) to cool you down as well ☺
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
He ate it since he was in his late 20s. But he cannot remember the restaurant name!! How can I find that? ☹ He continued saying that it also sells the best Hainanese Suki … and it is located in Trok Tao (Trok is the small road that smaller than the Soi and Tao is the Trok’s name) next to the 9-storey building. Then, I started my journey to find it.

When I was asking people around China Town about the 9-storey building, no one knew it. But I continued asking from one guy to another guy and walking from one shop to another shop. Finally, I found that the 9-storey building was demolished already. Yet, I still found the restaurant. Yes! It is Thai Heng Restaurant – one of Top 10 old famous venues in China town! It has been established since 1920 – the 90-year-old restaurant – the oldest restaurant I have ever visited!

Once, I tried their chicken rice, I totally agree with my grandfather. It is the best. Three main components of the chicken rice are all more than qualified. First, their rice is not too oily – they hang the boiled chicken on top of the rice and let the oil from the chicken dropping into the rice. Second, their chicken is perfectly sticky. And third, their sauce is special and so tasty. Also, for their suki, it has a good taste and good smell as cooked by hot stove. Again, their suki sauce filled with all different ingredients and adds a lot flavor to the dish. Their dishes here are all irresistible thanks to the real Hainanese secret recipe from the real Hainanese owner. It’s really worth to search for this restaurant. Thanks my grandfather to recommend such the best place to me ☺
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
When visiting this over-80-year-old Yim Yim Restaurant in China Town, I would say the caring from the restaurant owner to deliver the great experience across every touchpoints to every of his customers.

The following touchpoints could be a sample that I like to raise. First, he will welcome every of his customers by himself by smiling and saying hello as well as introducing the great dishes to his customers. Though this restaurant was started by his dad, I can imagine that his dad would have the same big Chinese smile as the current owner. That’s why their customers named this restaurant as Yim Yim since that time. Second, his food is delicious and special as he pays attention to every details of the food material as well as the recipe. Like Hue Sae (Chinese sushi) initiated by his dad, it is made from uncooked fresh Chinese fish – make it in very thin slides on top with white sesame. Dip it with self-initiated sauce. And eat with vegetables side dish. Just this, he can make people who normally not eat Japanese sushi like me can eat his Chinese sushi. Also, another signature dish like Pae Yen (cold goat). He uses a big piece of ham wrapped with a thin slide of goatskin. He serves it as cold together with asparagus salad. Third, occasionally he will search for excellence of rare food material to cook for his customers. So, you will look forward to visiting his restaurant in different seasons to find out what the best in each season that he will deliver another great experience to you. Like in March, he offers different menus made from Chinese bamboo, which is real difficult to find, as it will grow in China during the winter season only. It is believed by Chinese people that it is so-called Grateful Bamboo as one Chinese son went to pray for Buddha in the deep forest during the wintertime asking him to cure his mom from sickness. He went there everyday though it was so cold. Finally, God witnessed his tolerance and gratefulness, and then gave this bamboo to him to cook for his mom until she got well. After the story finished, I am eager to try one ☺
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
In addition, he sold his food to people living around that area in form of “Pin-To” or Tiffin (i.e. to pack food in food carrier for people to eat at home normally for dinnertime). Ten years later, this restaurant was moved to Plabplachai Intersection (the current location) and succeed by Khun Pitak (Mr. Sow’s son). As a creative person, Khun Pitak has started to adjust his father’s menus as well as initiated new menus to be more of variety and unique like Pan-Fried Hoi Tod (Fried Mussels with Eggs). Instead of serving on normal plate, he serves it on the hot pan. As well, instead of using only mussels, he creates more choice for his customers with oysters. Since then ‘til now, his Hoi Tod have become Top hit menus that attract so many customers filled up his restaurant at all times.

Besides Hoi Tod, another famous dishes here include Mhuu Sa-Ded, Fish Head with Taro Soup, and Peuk Hima (Snowy Taro). His Mhuu Sa-Ded is unique, as he will grill the pork on hot stove instead of boiling the pork as other restaurants do. Also, for a vegetable side dish of Mhuu Sa-Ded, he will select only young vegetables and slide it into thin pieces and serve it with ice. This make his vegetable side dish is very crispy and cool. He is very creative and put attention in every details of his dishes especially for his customers. This could be the outstanding secret that makes his restaurant so success.
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
It is not common to see these old people hanging in the nowadays café around Bangkok since the places seem not fit for them. Nonetheless, it is pretty common to see a crowd of old Chinese guys sit and talk at one particular café on Yaowaraj-Padsai Road. Yes! It’s Eia Sae - the over-80-years-established café that becomes a part of their life the same way that it becomes a part of China Town history.

You will see many old Chinese guys filled up this café everyday. They have been coming here since they were still young; maybe some coming here since their parents’ generation! They sit and talk and play some kind of game since the early morning started ‘til the day ended. And, they look very happy with their drinks and their lifestyle for the last stage of their life. ☺

It is not only the space that these people like from this café; it is also the drinks that matter. Of course, their coffee is so renowned not limit to China Town precinct as well as not limit to these ages of customers. It is widespread to every age of customers and every corners of town as it is doing some franchising across the town as well. Some of their drinks are special and unique unlike any other café. Like Nho Kao Yen (a mix of coffee and iced tea with milk), Nho Kao O-Liang (a mix of iced black coffee and iced tea with milk), and Heng Ying Yen (almond drink). You can buy their drink from everywhere with the sign “Eia Sae” but I would recommend to visit their café on Yoawaraj-Padsai Road to see the real live.
Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
Yes! Poonsin is the restaurant in the era that the parents still young the same way as it is a symbol of Roasted Duck.

As opened for over 50 years, you will see a group of old customers visiting this restaurant regularly. It can be imagined that they would come here since they were still young like your parents ☺ And of course, its roasted duck that still keep these people coming back here all the times. It is not only the taste of roasted duck that is good; the price of this dish is also reasonable (Baht 60, 120, and 240 for small, medium, and large side, respectively). Also, its goose’s limb is another famous dish of this place – just second to the duck.

Another dish that I like to recommend is its homemade dessert “Sweet Almond Bean Curd”. It is not a typical sweet bean curd, yet it is a bean curd that made from almond. So, it has better smell than the typical one. Ros Dee Ded (So Good Taste!) is the restaurant where you can choose to eat either the rice or the noodle thanks to their mother who can create the best recipe for both rice and noodle menus.

According to its restaurant name, if you try their noodle (can choose with beef or pork) and filled with their hot and spicy sauce (prik nam som in Thai), you will have no doubt why Rod Dee Ded become the restaurant name. You cannot call it something else! Nevertheless, do not stop yourself to eat just the noodle here. Once you try their Khao Nha Kai and/or Khao Nue Aob (rice with beef stew), you will make yourself come back here again and again. With a variety of menus together with a small portion of each dish, the owner can make sure you can eat more than one dish at a time.

Old Bangkok Eatery: True
Delivery Service Available: No
Claimed by Owner?: False
Author: Pukky Churuphant
This place is more like a hang-around drinking venue for people in that area. You will see a group of senior Chinese guys sit and talk together with one drink each, in particular every afternoon ☺ such a great life-style place for them… similar to Starbucks kind of a place for youngsters nowadays.. ☺☺☺

In this beverage-selling place, you will be impressed with so many such antique equipment/objects like old-styled coffee/tea making equipment (e.g. coffee/ tae bag, hot water boiler), ingredient container, refrigerator, drinking tables, and even ice smashing handle…!!!
